Vimal's Mannar Vagaiyara, Maduraveeran back out from Pongal release; three big films now set to battle it out for grabbing the audience eyeballs. Touted as one of Kollywood's biggest release days, Pongal this year could see only three films battle it out at the box office, with Vimal-starrer Mannar Vagaiyara and Shanmugapandian's Maduraveeran reportedly postponing their releases.
According to sources, leading distributors and theatre owners have now given preference only to three films — Suriya-starrer Thaanaa Serndha Koottam, Vikram's Sketch, and Prabhu Deva's Gulaebaghavali for Pongal release, sify.com reported. Mannar Vagaiyara and Maduraveeran--in which Vijayakant's son plays the hero, postponed their release on January 12 after failing to get enough screens, it added.
This comes in the backdrop of other films, including Irumbu Thirai starring Vishal and Arjun also backing out in the past few weeks. Maduraveeran, which will see cinematographer PG Muthiah making his directorial debut, was one among those few that remained to likely have a Pongal release. Thaanaa Serndha Koottam has got the maximum number of screens among the three films still in the race.
