DMK plans to hold ‘black flag’ demonstration in Salem
Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit would have a packed schedule during his visit to Salem district on Monday, as he would be inspecting a few places, receiving petitions from the public and conducting a review meeting with officials, sources said.
Meanwhile, the DMK has announced that it would hold a black flag demonstration in front of the Collectorate to condemn the Governor’s planned meeting with State government officials here.
Mr. Purohit would inaugurate the five-day Indian Social Science Congress in the city, organised jointly by the Periyar University and the Indian Academy of Social Sciences. Official sources said that the Governor would arrive in Salem by train from Chennai on Monday morning. After inaugurating the Indian Social Science Congress at the Periyar University campus at 10 a.m., he is expected to hold a review meeting at the Circuit House in Hasthampatti with senior government officials on the progress being made in the implementation of government schemes. Later, he would receive petitions from the public.
The Governor is also expected to visit a rural area in the Omalur block and the new bus stand in the city to create awareness on the Swachh Bharat initiative.
Security has been tightened in Salem city and surrounding areas ahead of the Governor’s visit, as the DMK has invited its allies to participate in its agitation.
After completing his visit here, the Governor would be heading to Nagercoil in connection with the proposed visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the cyclone-hit Kanniyakumari district.
